This history school trip explores many locations with great significance in the Civil War. Over three days, we will explore Harper’s Ferry, Antietem, and Gettysburg. We will also enjoy an Amish style dinner in Lancaster and end the trip with a fun visit to Hershey Park.
History School Trip: Day 1
This trip begins in the early afternoon at Harper’s Ferry National Historic Park. A national park ranger will lead you on a tour of battlefield areas and significant historical locations throughout the park.
Then, we will drive to Sharpsburg, Maryland to explore Antietem National Battlefield, the site of the bloodiest one day battle in American history.
Take a self-guided walking tour of the battlefield ending at the Mumma Farmhouse, the site of the only deliberate destruction of civilian property during the battle.
It’s time for two very engaging activities. First, is “Cannoneers, To Your Posts!” and then “Angels in the Battlefield”. During “Cannoneer, To Your Posts,” students take part in a Civil War artillery drill with artillery implements using one of the park’s cannons. (No actual firing of the cannon). During “Angels in the Battlefield” students will re-create the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam; dramatizing medical care, field hospitals, and Clara Barton’s role as a nurse. Students will discuss how they might feel before and during the battle, and about the care they received afterwards
After, we’re off to Gettysburg National Military Park! Dinner is provided at The Farmhouse Restaurant at The Barn Resort. You will definitely be full after this delicious dinner buffet!
Keep your wits about you. This evening we will go on a Ghosts of Gettysburg walking tour.
