St. Louis Multicultural Tour: A Customized Field Trip

What is the most interesting class you have ever taken? For students from Gallia County Local Schools, it may have been their multicultural class.

This class focused on countries that used to be Yugoslovia; now Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia. During their studies, the students learned Slavic Nation dances including Ersko Kolo, Setnja, Milanova, Gajde, Cardas, Haj Haj Boze Daj, and Slovenian, Dajcevo. In addition, they studied slavic folklore including “The Yellow-Haired Witch,” “The Prince and the Sky-Blue Filly,” and “The Prince and the Dragons.”

On top of the interesting class material, the course instructor wanted to include a travel experience that would enrich the education of her students. She worked with our tour-planning team to design a 3-day trip to St. Louis, Missouri that united course-relevant cultural experiences with those inherent to St. Louis. Here is the customized St. Louis multicultural tour she designed:

St. Louis Multicultural Tour: Day 1

Start your day mid afternoon at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park. Spend time in the European Art Collection.

Taste the exotic flavors of Bosnia and Southeast Europe during your cross-cultural dining experience at Grbic Restaurant.  Try sarma, jager schnitzel, palacinke, cevapi, valdostana, and ligne, among other items on the menu.

After dinner, motorcoaches depart for United Methodist Church for the Avalon Theatre Preview of “Little Bosnia“. This play was inspired by interviews with Bosnian refugees and their families overseas. Please note: This performance was for a limited time only and is not currently being performed. 

Following the show, participate in a discussion with the cast and artistic staff.

Then, check into your hotel accommodations for the evening.

St. Louis Multicultural Tour: Day 2

Start with filling breakfast before touring begins.

Step into history at the  Daniel Boone Home and Heritage Center and gain an appreciation for life on the American Frontier. Explore a collection of 19th century homes in the historic village, enjoy the scenic views of the Femme Osage Valley, and learn about the life of Daniel Boone.

After lunch,  watch the film “Monument to a Dream” in the bowels of iconic 630 ft tall Gateway Arch, the nation’s tallest monument. “Monument to a Dream” is the award-winning, original 1967 film that documented the construction of the Gateway Arch.

Then, take the tram to the very top of the Gateway Arch. If it’s a clear day, enjoy the views that stretch up to 30 miles.

It’s time to visit the Museum of Westward Expansion to see some of the rarest artifacts from the days of Louis and Clark. Explore a life-size tipi and covered wagon. See the tools and animals of the explorers, pioneers, and Native Americans who helped found our nation.

Step aboard the replica 19th-century paddle-wheel riverboat for your Gateway Dinner Cruise on the Mississippi.

After dinner, return to the hotel for the evening.

St. Louis Multicultural Tour: Day 3

Enjoy a relaxing breakfast at the hotel before checking out.

Visit the Challenger Learning Center. Take part in a 2-hour simulated space mission where crew members on board a spacecraft will work together with their teammates at Mission  Control to navigate, collect and analyze data using real robotic arms and glove boxes. Please note: This activity is available on select Saturdays only. Please check with your travel consultant for availability if you are interested in this venue. 

After lunch, depart for home.
