Atlanta Student Tour Guide: The Assignment
It’s your turn to be the tour guide! Prepare a 5-7 minute speech that showcases one of the sites that we will visit during our Atlanta trip. Your speech should include historical context of the site, architectural elements, a story, and relevant logistics. Your presentation must also incorporate visual aids. Get ready to shine the light on Atlanta!
Atalnta Student Tour Guide: Speech Elements
History
Provide brief context or background for events that inspired the construction of the memorial, building, city, or sculpture. For example, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Change, you could discuss the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Architectural Elements
Discuss the symbolism, layout, or interesting facts about memorial/building design. For example, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Change, you can see an eternal flame. This eternal flame symbolizes the continuing effort to realize Dr. King’s dream for a world of justice, peace and equality for all mankind.
Story
Tell a fun or interesting story pertaining to the memorial/building and/or the event it commemorates. For example, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Change, you could tell the true stories of his childhood accomplishments and shortcomings.
“This is one thing I tell young people. Dr. King was a C-student at Morehouse. He got a C in public speaking, he got a C in preaching. That grows you. It tells you that you don’t allow grades and people’s judgments even to define who you are and what you’re going to contribute to this world and he just continued to push forward and did not let it discourage him,” Bernice King said.
Logistics
Address any relevant information pertaining to bathrooms, photography, security, meeting time, etc.
Atlanta Student Tour Guide: Visual Aids
Visual aids are essential context for your presentation. However, since tour guides do not implement Powerpoint, Google Slides, etc. while on tour, this is not to be included. You may include one or more of the following:
