Dress Accordingly: 6 Tips for What to Wear on a School Trip

What to Wear

Deciding what to wear on a school trip can be challenging! You want to be comfortable, but you also want to look good. Here are our recommendations:

What to Wear Tip #1: Check the Weather

This may sound obvious, but many students do not think to do this before a trip. Check the weather forecast for your destination city prior to packing and especially the night before departure. The weather may vary wildly from your home town and may change day-to-day and hour-by-hour. Check the weather, and then pack accordingly! Don’t forget sunscreen, an umbrella, a scarf, gloves, etc. Students end up needlessly miserable by skipping this important step.

What to Wear Tip #2: Dress in Layers

School trips are often touring in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Each time of day can bring its own unique weather and temperature. Bring light layers on the bus – a long sleeve shirt, a light jacket, a raincoat, etc. You’ll be happy that you did when it is cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon.

What to Wear Tip #3: When in Doubt, Choose Long Pants

If you are debating between shorts or pants, choose pants. There is a certain amount of dust and grime that you will accumulate while walking through the city all day. If you think this will bother you, wear pants to feel cleaner for longer.

Additionally, some sites on your itinerary may be more conservative by nature. Pants ensure that you are dressed appropriately.

What to Wear Tip #4: Pack More than One Pair of Shoes

A school trip is not the time to break in a new pair of shoes. You will be walking more often than you think! Wear shoes that are broken-in and make sure that you bring a backup pair. Some shoes seem comfortable until they result in surprising blisters. Your feet will thank you if you alternative shoes between days of touring.

What to Wear Tip #5: Err on the Conservative Side

When in doubt, choose the more conservative clothing. This will ensure that you represent yourself and your school well. Additionally, if sites more conservative in nature are included on your itinerary (think, the United Nations, the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery), you will want to dress respectfully.

What to Wear Tip #6: Align with School Dress Code

Does your school have a school trip dress code? Many schools have guidelines in place for what can and cannot be worn during a school trip. Prepare accordingly.

Will the students have school trip t-shirts or sweatshirts? Many schools commemorate the trip with a t-shirt that everyone wears on a particular day. Make sure yours is packed!

Will your student be laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery? Dress code guidelines are in place.
